Akronaflion Akronaflion

The castle of Akronaflion - "high Nafplion" - is the oldest part of the town, its origin going back to the Bronze Age period in the 13th century BC. There is even evidence of a pre-historic settlement. In the course of history, Akronafplion served the Mycenaeans, Franks, Venetians, Ottomans and Greeks as fortification. The current form of the castle, although quite changed by modern intervention, basically crystallised during the Frankish and first Venetian occupations from the 13th to 16th centuries. Up until the end of the 15th century there were also private quarters in Akronafplion, but from then on only to be used by the military.
